                                            Beginners guide to CoM: Charlemagne

Ok, so this is your first server on Chronicles of Merlin, and you are getting your butt kicked by other players. This is for you guys.

Tip #1: Always enlighten your hero's, as Charlemagne we need bravery stats the most,
the majority of our hero's attack with normal damage.
Tip #2: Always research, this gives great boosts to your battling capabilities. The most important research is Tempered Steel, Plate Mail and Fortifications. Max these first. Conscription should be last, it gives the least boost. Nonetheless, extra units do help. Once you reach level 35, you will unlock the Book of Prayers research. This is vital against spell damage, eg players from the King Arthur kingdom, or the boss named Gilles de Rais. Spell damage cannot be blocked or dodged, the only chance you have is this research.

First off, and most importantly, get those gears!!
In order of gear strength, it goes White > Green > Blue > Purple > Orange > Red
You will not get a red item until later on the game. Your first orange item (legendary) comes at HYWL (Hundred Years War Legion) and should be obtained immediately.

Now, ill say this at the top incase you have already done it. Do not ever buy white (common) gear, ever.
The only time you should have brought a common item is when you first started, you need a common sword and plate mail to get through the first 2 campaigns. After you have access to Gold Lance and Dragon Bone Plate, there is no need to upgrade or buy more common items. If you have upgraded your common item to +20 or above, stop right there. You are wasting silver.

Equip all of your hero's with Dragon Bone Plate which drops from a boss named Odo de St Amand in Holy Crusades Campaign. Secondly, Viking Invasion Legion drops a great weapon for lower levels, continue battling this until all of your hero's have one.

As you loot those items, spend all silver to upgrade them. Try to upgrade when the magic % is around 90%. It is ok to upgrade when you first get an item at lower percentages, because if you do fail, the loss is minimal.

Once those gears are all around +20, even +25, you should be able to get through Transylvania Campaign.

Once you reach the Legion battle, continue fighting this until all hero's have Dragon Cuirass armor. This armor will last you until Golden Horde Campaign, which is quite hard to finish for anyone under level 40.

After all of your hero's have that armor, complete the Hundred Years War campaign, you will receive an epic weapon as a quest reward. If you spend gold on this game, do some spins on the wheel of fortune and hope for Stone of Blessing. Use this stone on the Hundred Years War Legion to obtain fragments of Hauteclere, a legendary weapon.

Now, the scouting feature unlocks once you reach level 30. You can find this in the armory, where you upgrade your gears. One of the best things about scouting is you can find excellent cloaks, which protect you against gambits. This is vital when fighting Caesar players. Almost all Caesar players will have gambit hero’s in their formation, and later in the game when they get Nero these cloaks will become very valuable.

You might think “they cost heaps, 10,000 for one?” well they do cost heaps, but it is really worth it. Getting a green cloak at lower levels will last you a long time, and will save your butt in many battles.

Crowns. These are nice pieces, but ONLY buy them if you have spare gold (from the Emporium located in the armory) or if you have spare silver (buy them from the armory section in the armory). These items add extra units to your hero’s total.

Ok that should do for equipment, by now you should have the idea. Now, for equipping hero's:

Hero's that deal normal damage, eg Saladin and Astolpho, do not need horses (mounts).
Only upgrade a mount if you are planning to get a gambit hero, eg Attila the Hun and Alfred the Great.

The hero that has the highest bravery stat should be equipped with the best weapon and armor available, in lower levels of the game Astolpho is this hero.

Now, once you are confident in your battling abilities, start the task of gaining prestige!
Prestige allows you to use the best hero's in the game. 20,000 prestige is the first goal,
with that amount you can recruit Fierbras. This hero shoots columns of enemies, so he
will hit a target and any target that is behind it.

Now, the hero’s and combinations you can use.

If you picked Rickon for a starter hero, thats a great start. He should last a while, although his stats are pretty bad. If you havent got 2,000 prestige get it now. Astolpho is great, and will last a long time.

This formation is a great start for Charlemage, and will last until you swap Rickon for Fierbras
(or Jochi, depending who you get first. But most likely Fierbras):
****Click on this to see a starting formation****

That is Rickon (uptop) La Hire (in middle) Saladin (front, down bottom) and Astolpho (back, down bottom). La Hire is a great meat shield, better than Richard the Lionheart.

If you wish to mix it up a bit, recruit Attila the Hun or Alfred the Great. They NEED good mounts. Scout youself a blue (rare) mount, and upgrade it to +30 for a good effect. If you wish to maximise the gambit hero’s capabilities, recruit Boudica. As I mentioned above, use the scouting feature to get good mounts. Also take note of the level required to use it, if it is too high sell it straight away, you are looking 2 mounts in particular at these levels: Darded Destrier (blue, rare) which requires level 21 to use, and Armored Destrier (blue, rare) which requires level 29 to use. These mounts will last you until the Norman Conquest Campaign, upon which when you finish you will recieve Robust Neapoilitan Horse as a quest reward, which is an epic item. This mount will last you until you scout for a War Elephant (orange, legendary).

Boudica’s effect is great, she boosts a random hero’s morale to 100, and if you only have 1 gambit hero in your formation she will only target this hero. In this way, the gambit hero will do his special attack every single round, unless Boudica fails (currently she has a 75% chance to succeed).

Note: If you get confused with gambit hero’s, they only use their special attack when morale reaches 100 or above. Anything over 100 morale is extra damage, a gambit hero with 134 morale will do 125% damage (around about that). This is the main reason you will see flag bearers in Caesar’s formation later in the game. They can be brutal, when placed correctly.

Magic Hero’s: Besides a priest (eg. Boudica, she is called a priest), all magic hero’s need a good staff if you wish to use them. Upgrade the research Alchemy to maximise their effect. The higher this is, the better your hero.

I hope this short guide helped you; Have fun!
