The Art of War




Throughout history great generals had written down their strategies on warfare so that others could benefit from their knowledge and experience.  

Several topics arise in a great general's mind, such as troop placement building logistics, and resource availability.  Some of these topics are questioned below.

Focus on one topic or answer them all!  Or make up your own topic to contribute to the TKO community!

The best and most brilliant responses will be added to the "War Manual"  and be given an award (listed at the bottom of the thread).

This event will last one (1) month.

Defense





Sun Tzu said:

To defend may not always be the weak point, which instead, will allow you to fight back by surprise.

Where to place a new city.. The best place to put your new city is within the territorial of your city 7x7....

What city/cities to place your mansion or annex... The mansion must be place on your first city to make your resource higher than 20.. And the annex must be place in your next city/cities..

How to defend your city effectively... The best way to defend is to build more defenses structure in your city wall, and put archers in your tower...

De fence..
Build Monitors Office in all your town .
Requirement: Mansion Level 1 , Library Level 5

Monitors Office: Monitor is responsible for the quality of the construction in the city. The quality of buildings can be improved with a Monitor's Office, and they are firmer under attack.

Library requirement: Mansion level 1

Technique: Build mansion first, upgrade library to level 5 then build monitors office. do that in every city, demolished the mansion (library requires lvl 1 mansion)  and use annex for creating new city .
Build and upgrade Mansion, once you decide which best town/city for you to build it

City Wall/Tower: It Provides bonus defense,bare min requirement for defence support troops when under attack.
100 200 population at least level 5-10 city wall, level 2 tower (w/archers)
200-400 population at least 10-15 city wall, level 3-5 tower
400-600 population and a above at least 15-20 city wall level 6-10 for towers,, and so on...

Defense Troops:
Wei: Swordsman
Wu: Shield Infantry
Shu: Pikemen

Before expansion/make new city make sure that your city can with stand at least 3 k - 5k attacks, before expanding.

Defence is very important in this game , as you wouldnt know when you ll be attacked , its better be read than sorry.

How to support a city successfully

Supporting army is a very crucial thing in this game,, as it requires a lot of teamwork,unity and planning. It will be wiser to follow the chain of command . member-vice legion leader-legion leader and so on.

1. Report your status (damage, time of attack etc.)
2. Be active ( Your superiors need you to be active for updates)
3. Know your attacker well (read his attacks, his timing etc.)
4. Communication ( under attack member / leaders/ support troops member)
5. Planning (how many army/ troops need to be send/ best time for support def troops to deploy)
6. Be prepared ( grain ) (city wall) (tower)

Do not only rely on your support troops it also requires additional def points to make the support team successful try to build city wall and tower as long as you can manage.

There are many strategies in attacking strong enemy:

First, send your scout first... then if you think you can handle him...:
1. you can send full cavalry if you are very confident in winning so that you will not waste your time.
2. You can send your Full army (combination of infantry and cavalry) so that you can minimize your casualties (it takes more time of course).
3. Send some fake attacks (1 soldier only) to his sub-city. then send full attack to your main target. (You can vary sending your fake attacks before or after the full attack to make your target confused)
4. If you you know that your enemy's force is powerful against infantry then you can send a full set of cavalry + 1 infantry (to make him think that infantry is the main army of his attacker) and your enemy will gather his full army of infantry defender so after your full cavalry+1 infantry arrived.... it would be a big WHAAAM for him.><

While for attacking inactive player:

Check his population, see the growth for few days, no growth? message him, no responses? Scout him. If: (1. Your scout didn't come back? Think twice before attacking...), (2. You think you can handle him it means fresh meat for you )

Infrastructure

Where to place a new city.
City placement depends on definition of the city. Initial startup cities should be placed so that their oasis claims do not conflict, but as close as possible. Common error is to place 6-7 cities right next to each other. While this provides near instant support, there is a lack of oasis bonuses. Additionally try to spread to use league flag effectively if that is in the mandate of your league - trying to get 4 villages all on the corners of league flag positions is a good idea.

What city/cities to place your mansion or annex.
If you are a turtle player, mansion should be placed in a 4/4/4/6 and the city should be packed with warehouses, near a 15cropper to store troops. An offensive player should mansion a 15cropper or 9cropper to maximize troop deployments, and will need the mansion to strengthen walls.

What order to build city structures in.
In the beginning, develop resources, then builder's, then troops. This should be done within beginner's protection. Later in the game, in subs, basic resources/buildings, then builder's, then advanced. Customize villages - resource shipping subs need library and market up fast, unit producers need barracks/smiths, etc.

What city structures are useless after a certain time.
-Mansion/annexe when all slots used
-weap/armor/valor/library once all desired upgrades are purchased
-career centre, after sufficient oasis are taken
-drill ground, after all units researched

Using the best strategy that is suited for each kingdom.
All kingdoms can do all things, however, wei is traditionally power attacks and citybuilding, wu is traditionally defensive and raiding, shu is traditionally raiding and swarm tactics.

Resource

Is one resource more valued over others in a certain kingdom?
Wu: Stone, for raiding/defensive/demolisher villages, iron for attacking villages, wood for archer/rams villages. Fairly balanced, well-balanced villages will be screwed for each resource at various stages of development.

Managing resources effectively to maximize army potential.
Mixed recruiting to effectively use resources. Also creating of different subs, and using subs that have the 5 near oasis that match the 5 field.

Is there a best order to upgrading resources/units?
Stone, wood, iron, wheat, in a 4/4/4/6. Otherwise, no. Units, upgrade only what they are used for. Don't upgrade spear/pike/hvyinf attack, for example.

Is it worth your time and effort to capture a capital city and why?
If you're ahead of your enemies in units, yes, fast unit production and instant hammer.

How to stack resource bonuses for maximum effectiveness.
many heroes, governor with best pol + scroll item equipped.

How to effectively manage your food supply.
2 theories.
1. Never go negative theory. Do not build more troops than wheat holds. These players go for 15croppers and 9croppers to hold troops and use subs to feed it.
Pro: never negative. Con: Decentralized army (weaker) until 15cropper is well built.
2. Go massive negative theory. Store troops in subs until attack needed.
Pro: Easier. Con: Having all food raided and wheat demoed freezes player (unable to move troops)

Hero
Hero progression, should he/she be a str/ldr/pol/int hero?
-If not battling, 1 politic per resource sub.
-1 leadership hero per attacking city
-rest of heroes at main hammer.

How to make a "super hero" from stacking abilities and scrolls.
-Vacant city hero: Stack as many skills that make empty city happen on heroes, pack into 1 city.
-Powerhouse hero - stack skills with epic's inherent skill. For example, stack seige skills on Ma Dai.

How to win the Warrior's Tournament.
Buy Gold, have good items is 50%. Using a good build is the other 50%.
Sample builds:
Healing/dodging build, Restore + cunning.
Hard hitting build, Lots of HP from equips. Courage/heroic/berserk/doublestrike/etc.

Defense

How to defend a city successfully.
-Use your league.
-Tell everyone wheat production and granary limits so support can be fed
-ensure food transportation for defending units
-or dodge.
What units give the best defense? Is upgrading your armorsmith effective?
-Armorsmith is not as good as more units. Armorsmith however is useful when resources are plentiful.
Supporting another city
-Feed your units and make sure there's granary limit.

Offense
How to build a large army and support it.
-covered in "How to effectively manage your food supply."
How to use rams/demolishers effectively.
-Two theories
1. Large smashes. Large amounts of units + rams/demos, multiple waves, i.e. 3 waves of 10ksdinf + 100 demos. Pros: Prevents dodging to catch poorly guarded demos, prevents empty city strategy. Cons: Fewer attacks, more units required.
2. Wave attack. Clearing waves + rams, then followup demo waves with minimal support. Pros: few units required. Cons: will be badly beaten by good players with good timing and/or vacant city strategy.

What units to recruit first.
Raiders. Then:
For defenders, core defender unit, then speed defender unit (one that can support fast).
For attackers, core attacker unit, demos, lastly, rams. Rams are least necessary since you can just shoot over walls - not all enemies need rams to be beaten.

*Where to place a new city.

Well, in my opinion,
I place a new city (sub city) near to my main city, so that my main city can continuously transport resources to new city and by this way, my new city is growing fast. my main city can produce 4000++ each resources per hour, and just around level 13. can't imagine how much can be produce per hour when reach level 20! So, Main city can be a "centre" to help other new city to grow.

Besides, when placing a new city, I always make sure there is 2 desired oasis within the 7x7 territory. For example: If my new city have resources field structure as (wood 3) (stone 4) (Iron 5) (food  6), which means is lack of wood, so I'll make sure that there is wood oasis in 7x7 area.  



What city structures are useless after a certain time.

Builder's Guild is useless when a city structures are all complete. This is because the function of Builder's Guild is to increase the speed of building structure, so, when all structures are completely ungraded, which means Builder's Guild had loose it's function. But, do not take a risk to demolish Builder's Guild, because if you had been attacked by enemy with demolisher and when your level of structure had down upgraded by the demolisher, you can build up level faster with Builder's Guild. That will be an headache without Builder's Guild.
