2010 Year of Tiger is coming!

The Chinese New Year,Spring Festival(2010 Feb. 14th) is just around the corner,as the most important traditional Chinese holiday. It is also called the "Lunar New Year".This year is the Year of Tiger.
The festival begins on the first day of the first month in the Chinese calendar and ends on the 15th:this day is called Lantern Festival. Chinese New Year's Eve is known as Chu Xi. It means "Year pass Eve".
During the Spring Festival, every family is busy cleaning house in the hope of getting rid of defilements and preventing diseases. Also, they need to paste door-god, spring festival couplets, and the reversed Chinese character(means blessing)for auspiciousness in the New Year.
Everyone, young and old, looks forward to celebrating the most grand and longest festival of the year.Every family gets together to celebrate it.On the New Year's Eve, people who are far away from home will come back, regardless of long-distance travel, so the "Grand Dinner on New Year's Eve" is also called "Family Reunion Dinner". Whatever the condition is, every family will make the dinner the most sumptuous and ceremonious one in the year.
Traditional food prepared for the Spring Festival varies with customs in different regions. However, those with auspicious names, meanings or shapes are favored, such as "New Year Cake" (niangao in Chinese, suggesting better fortune in the new year), dumplings, the shape of which is similar to ingots, suggesting bringing in wealth and treasure, as well as fish,symbolizing amassing fortunes.
People will pay a New Year call to one another from the first day, and it is not until the Lantern Festival.In the morning, people put on their new clothes and shoes. Men, with their wives and children,call on relatives and friends and present them gifts such as fruits, wines, flowers, etc. Common expressions heard at this time are: Guonian Hao (Happy New Year), and Bainian(to congratulate the New Year).The caller is served tea with sweet,melon seeds,fruits and delicacies such as puffed rice cakes, dump-lings and deep-fried round doughnuts. In addition, liquor and tobacco are offered. Before leaving, the host presents gifts of money wrapped in red paper to all the unmarried children of the family.
