Does anyone know for sure how these are obtained? I think you receive the Marching Chest when you purchase gold, but are there any other ways to get them?

You will have a chance to get Marching Pock by challenging the Heroes or General in the Faction map.

Marching Chest is not released yet. But you'll get one Marching Chest each time when you buy 200 gold.

Okay.  Let's see what happens if we eliminate the need for buying gold from the game.  Oh, there's no income.  Oh, the programmers have left to get a paying job.  Oh, the servers have shut down because the bills haven't been paid.  Oh, we have no game.

Come on, people.  Don't expect something for nothing!  You _can_ play this game without buying gold, but don't take issue with the fact that the people who designed and developed the game actually want to make some money out of it!!
