Chainmail guard are best because they are so hard to kill and therefore go with the play style of the infantry heroes who can be set for high leadership and defensive skills. Halberdians, you choose if you know your enemy is going to have his whole kingdom spam cavalry, the same with Rattans and archers. Rattans have a good marching speed, so are very good for moving from defense to attack.
Hammerfists are needed in any kingdom that wants to end battles fast, they can kill thousands of t2 archers at a time. They probably rate #2 on the list. I like /broadsword sentinels for defending inner city if thats what your job in the kingdom will be, but their specialization causes trouble for anyone wanting to remain versatile. Even Chainmail Guard are used effectively in attacks, because they can be sent in first wave to tank enemy cavalry.
#3 on the list is Probably yellow turbans, they are hard enough to kill that you dont feel like you wasted the resources and they deal allot of damage. They also have respectable resource requirements, food useage and march speed.

What about gallants? i tought they would be decent tanks since they reduce all incoming damage to them.

If you are an inf player it is better to just do Goliaths then any u1 choice. Most u1s eat more food then u2s and their damage output is worse then t3 archers. U1 is better for archers and Cavalry which both have great choices like qiangs, xbows, stallions, and iron clads. Just my opinion as i have seen the power of Goliaths and u1 inf in many battles.

For Defence I go Chainmails period.

Roving Gallants for sure. i find them to be a good tank as well as a good first round troop if your others might be a wee bit late especially in a big battle like a capital fight.
Yeah, I am Deadmau5.

I chose Chainmail Guards in s6 due to their high def. and hp.  This is what I found out later on as the server progressed:

Pros
Chainmails have the best U1 defense
Chainmails doesn't really have any natural enemies

Cons
Chainmails have pretty lame attack
Chainmails are costy U1 to make
Chainmails' food consumption is greater than any U1 and U2

Here's a little something I'd like to share.  Chainmails are pretty expensive U1 unit; they're not as productive as other U1 in terms of attack rating, so I would think twice before throwing them into a city raid.  Defense is where Chainmails shine.  Therefore try to maximize their ability by doing what they do best.

I'm a team player and a true tanker, this is what I did.  For half of my heroes, I attributed the points to politics, solely for the purpose of tanking.  I would take heroes like Cheng Yu, Xun You, Xun Yu, Tian Feng, Yang Xiu, ones with either Earth-Heaven Form or Sieve Form to command Chainmails.  Since they have low leadership, setting them inner wall suits best.  Then I would take my other half of the heroes, high power or int. archers to be sitting on the walls, dishing the damage while opponents hit Chainmails.  And trust me, this is where you see the beauty of Chainmails.  They are definitely the best complementary unit to defending archers.

depends on what kind of player you are...

for people who likes damage... turbans and hammerfist
for people who play defence... chainmail... or broadsword sentinels....

if your a busy player/casual player then i recommend broadsword sentinels... they are really good when it comes to city defense.... plus they dont cost much iron and stone.. which you could use for your t3s... yes it cost a fair amount of food... but since it is in city defense... you can put it there and just use the reserves...

for those who doesnt know... broadsword has more att and def when def cities... =)
